“WINTER and being an Ironworker have changed my life.”

Monserrat Roldan, WINTER Graduate May 2022

Beyond the surface of everyday life lies the sweat, skill, and dedication of countless tradespeople who shape our world. This Labor Day, we're reclaiming the essence of the holiday by honoring these hidden heroes who bring life to our cities, industries and homes. While the hands of tradespeople may go unnoticed, their craftsmanship is woven into the fabric of society, reminding us that everything we touch, use, and rely on is indeed trades-made. So let's pause to appreciate the electricians, carpenters, plumbers, builders, and all those who turn dreams into reality. This Labor Day, let's celebrate not just a day off, but a day dedicated to the hardworking individuals who truly make the world go 'round. #TradesMade

WINTER has helped change the lives of so many women by playing a part in re-writing their stories for the last 26 years through our free pre-apprenticeship training. From a formerly incarcerated mother, to now a successful ironworker journeyman at Local 433. A domestic violence survivor found her strength and put it to good use by becoming a successful laborer and instructor with Local 300. A mother struggling to keep a roof over her family’s head has been able to put a down payment on a home by working as a plumber at Local 78. All of this has been made possible by people that believed in the same mission and vision as WINTER, and by understanding that gender equity is now more important than ever.

Our continuing mission and vision, along with our new theme, Hard Hat Women Equity, Building a better world for women, are even more critical as the ongoing effects of the pandemic threaten the future of women and girls. WINTER is needed now more than ever! Our vision for gender equity is not yet a reality. We need a strong, committed community of our members, partners, friends and supporters. Together, we have the skills, will, energy and resources to make a difference for Los Angeles women.

Together we can build a better world, where women and equity are the future of construction!

WINTER’s Goals are to Increase the percentage of women working in union construction and building trades industry. Promote Construction careers for low-income women of color and prepare low-income women to attain the skills to become competitive in the workforce. We know that with with your help, WE CAN! This funding will partially support 100 women in becoming trailblazers in the union construction and building trades industry, resulting in reducing the gap from training to union apprenticeship, increasing the visibility of women in apprenticeships, and supporting women as they break down gender stereotypes, eliminate the wage gap, and excel in union construction and building trades better careers.
